2011 Regional Roundtable for Oklahoma

Southern Women in Public Service Leadership: Measuring Progress and Moving Forward is a roundtable discussion program that will take place October 28-29, 2011 at the University of Oklahoma. The Stennis Center is working with the Women’s Leadership Initiative of the Carl Albert Center for Congressional Research and Studies at the University of Oklahoma directed by Sheryl Lovelady to present this unique program focused on strengthening the impact of women in public service.

The Roundtable is limited to 28 to 32 key leaders from Oklahoma, who will examine the current status of women in public service leadership and determine how we can most effectively increase the involvement of women in leadership at the local, state and national levels. Oklahoma currently ranks 49th in the percentage of women state legislators but has women serving as governor, state superintendent of public instruction and corporation commissioner. Carole Leland, an internationally recognized leadership development expert and a long-time leader in the Stennis Center's Southern Women in Public Service program, will facilitate the roundtable.

This roundtable builds on the work of the Stennis Center’s recent focus on women’s political leadership with its emphasis on an interactive dialogue-based program. At the roundtable, women leaders will explore:

•  What are current obstacles facing women in public service leadership, how have the

obstacles changed over time, and how can obstacles be removed?

•  Can women work together across partisan lines to bring about change?

•  How can more women be brought into public service leadership?  What more can we

do to promote women's political leadership and how do we do it?
