Lynne Weil

As a UCLA journalism alumna, Lynne worked for United Press International and CALNET Public Radio before spending nine years in Europe.  In Germany, she was a producer, reporter and host for Radio Deutsche Welle in Cologne and worked as a freelance foreign correspondent for U.S. public radio based in Bonn.  Lynne then moved to Rome, Italy, and served as a European correspondent for the Catholic News Service, as well as doing freelance work for NPR and The Boston Globe.  At her mid-career point, Lynne chose to leave behind the role of the observer in favor of more active participation in public affairs.  She used her American Political Science Association (ASPA) Fellowship and her work towards completing a master’s in public policy at Princeton to make a two-year transition in careers.  As an APSA fellow, she served as a foreign policy legislative aide for U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy.  During her graduate studies the next year, she also wrote several stories for The New York Times.  She assumed her first position on Capitol Hill as the press secretary with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.  After two years, Lynne switched to the House Foreign Affairs Committee to become communications director.  In that position, she acted as the chairman’s spokesperson, oversaw all media-related communications for the chairman and the committee while writing speeches, op-eds, floor statements, news releases and other materials.  She has been with the State Department for a year, having spent six months as the press director at USAID before moving to her present role as a senior advisor to Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Judith McHale.  The single most rewarding aspect of her job is seeing ideas take shape and become real programs that produce results.
