Faye Culp has served as a State Representative in Florida for a total of ten years (1994-98 and from 2004 to the current day but will be term-limited in 2010) and was the first woman elected in District 57 and the first Republican elected in the district. She was the first Republican woman to serve as Chairman of the Hillsborough County Legislative Delegation and the first Republican woman to serve as Majority Whip in the Florida House. Culp is currently serving as Chairman of the Education Policy Council for the House. She has participated in the Stennis Center's women's leadership initiatives for many years.
The State of Florida 4-H Foundation has named Representative Culp as the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award for 2009. Culp frequently gives 4-H the credit for the skills, especially in leadership, that she learned as a young 4-H club member in the Mississippi Delta. 4-H was, and still is, an important part of her life as she works tirelessly as the Honorary Director of the Hillsborough County 4-H Foundation.
The University of South Florida has given Culp the 1997 Distinguished Alumna Award for Outstanding Service and Mississippi University for Women gave her their highest alumni honor, 1998 Woman of Achievement. The International Council of Shopping Centers presented her with their 1997 Legislator of the Year award and she has been honored several times by the Florida Chamber of Commerce. Because of her major educational legislation, the Florida School Board Association named her as one of their Legislators of the Year. She was named "Woman of Distinction" by the Girl Scouts of America and "Woman of the Century" by Tampa Civic Association. She was the first Republican woman to Chair the Joint House and Senate Committee on Information Technology Resources and has served as Chairman of the Juvenile Justice Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee. Culp was awarded a Special Award for Service from the Florida Federation of Republican Women for her accomplishments on a local, state, and national level. During her School Board service, she was a Member of the State Instructional Council for Textbook Selection, Member of the Technology Task Force, Chairman of the State Bylaws Committee, was active on the national level, and served on CUBE (Council of Urban Boards of Education).
Culp's involvement with the National Foundation of Women Legislators stems from her election in 1994 and has thrust her onto the national stage as President of the National Order of Women Legislators (the national membership organization) and Chairman of the National Foundation of Women Legislators Board. She also led a delegation of women legislators from ten different states to Bahrain, a country located next to Saudi Arabia. Women in Bahrain gained the right to vote in 2001. In 2006 Culp led a delegation to Taiwan to promote economic opportunities and continued public relations.
