John Glen Browder is a former member of the United States House of Representatives from Alabama's 3rd congressional district. Browder was born in Sumter, South Carolina and graduated from Edmunds High School in 1961. He attended Presbyterian College, where he graduated with a degree in 1965. He went on to obtain a masters degree and Ph.D from Emory University in Atlanta in 1971.

Before earning his graduate degrees, Browder served a brief stint as a sportswriter for the Atlanta Journal in 1966 and later as an investigator with the United States Civil Service Commission from 1966 until 1968. Following completion of his degrees, he became a professor of political science at Jacksonville State University, Alabama, 1971-1987 and served as the president of Data Associates in Anniston, Alabama from 1978 to 1987.

Political career
Browder's political career began in the Alabama statehouse, where he served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1982 to 1986 and then as Alabama Secretary of State from 1987 to 1989.

He was elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred First Congress, by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative William F. Nichols, and reelected to the three succeeding Congresses (April 4, 1989 - January 3, 1997).

In the House, Browder served on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Budget Committee. He focused on military readiness and balancing the federal budget. He was not a candidate for reelection to the House of Representatives in 1996, but was an unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the United States Senate.

After Congress
Following his time in the House of Representatives, Browder accepted two academic positions, the first as a Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Department of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School, with primary responsibility in the area of "Congress and the Pentagon." He also is Eminent Scholar in American Democracy at Jacksonville State University in Alabama.
