Chairman of the Board, Eagle Newspapers, Inc. 1968 to present
Since assuming the chairmanship of the $30 million publishing and printing company it has grown from three newspapers with $500,000 volume to 28 independent profit centers employing more than 400 individuals in 19 cities in Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

Political Career
Member of Congress 1981-1991.
Defeated 20-year incumbent, Al Ullman, chairman of House Ways and Means Committee, and won four subsequent elections. Member House Budget Committee, Interior and Insular Affairs, Veterans Affairs. Founder and co-chairman of the Congressional Aviation Forum; co-chairman Congressional Military Reform Caucus, chairman House Republican Task Force on Crime.
Appointed by Dept. of Defense Secretary Dick Cheney to Special Operations Policy Advisory Group (SOPAG)
Founder, Oregonians Against Crime, which passed Oregon's 1988 anti-crime initiative
Won hotly-contested Republican primary nomination in 1994 gubernatorial campaign
Republican National Committeeman for Oregon, 1994-2000
Hosted political talk show for two years; serves as guest commentator for various tv/radio coverage of political affairs

Military Service/Aviation Activities
Earned private pilot license in 1955 at the age of 17
Graduated from Air Force pilot training 1959
Oregon Air National Guard 1958-62 and 1968
U.S. Air Force 1962-67 out of MacDill AFB during Cuban crisis, Cam Ranh Bay, and George AFB. Flew 180 combat missions in Vietnam 1965-66; received Air Medal with six oak leaf clusters; ended service at rank of Captain. Aircraft flown: T-34, T-28, T-33, T-38, F-86L, F89H/J, F84F, F-4B/C/D
